The 29-year old’s was due to expire at the end of the season, but the Red Devils had an option to extend it by a further 12 months and The Athletic report that they have done just that.
The Sweden captain has been at Old Trafford since signing from Benfica in 2017 for £31m and has gone on to make 249 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.
Jose Mourinho was in charge when he arrived in Manchester and had to break into a central defence of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, so much has changed over the Swede’s career with the club so far.
However, he remains an important part of the squad, making 18 appearances across all competitions this campaign while the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane have all been struggling with injuries.
He is currently out of action, though, after undergoing surgery on a groin issue earlier this month, expected to recover by the end of January.
Erik ten Hag’s side take on Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening, with Varane and Jonny Evans at the heart of defence.
Manchester United still have decisions to make over Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Anthony Martial and Hannibal Mejbri who are all out of contract at the end of the season, but the club can extend their deals by a year if they want.
Tom Heaton and Jonny Evans also see their contracts expire in June but there is no such option in their deals.
