Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as Unai Emery's side draw with Manchester United at Villa Park

by · Birmingham Live

Aston Villa drew 0-0 with Manchester United after a flat performance at Villa Park.

The draw extends Villa’s unbeaten home record in all competition to four matches, but Unai Emery’s side wanted to return to winning ways in the league following the stalemate with Ipswich Town last weekend.

Villa suffered an injury blow in the 12th minute when Ezri Konsa came off with what looked like a muscular injury and was replaced by Diego Carlos. Amadou Onana and Jacob Ramsey both missed out through injury, but Leon Bailey started after passing a late fitness test.

It was a dull first half as Villa and United both struggled to make chances to break the deadlock. Emi Martinez batted away an effort from Marcus Rashford early on, while Morgan Rogers pulled a strike wide from the edge of the box, but Villa didn’t register a shot on target.

Martinez was on hand to deny Rashford at the start of the second period as he tipped the ball over. Rashford was lucky to stay on the pitch after preventing Bailey from entering the box just minutes after seeing a yellow card for tripping Cash up.

Jhon Duran was introduced on the hour mark in place of Bailey, but it was United who came the closest to breaking the deadlock shortly after the Colombian’s arrival in the match. Fernandes struck the bar from a free-kick before Antony pulled the rebound wide.

Philogene was presented with Villa's best chance of the game in added time, but his strike from close range was blocked by Diogo Dalot.

Villa’s next match comes after the October international break against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday, October 19 (3pm).

Player ratings

Emi Martinez

Martinez made a smart stop to deny Rashford early on, but wasn't otherwise troubled in the first half. He then made another fine stop to deny Rashford in the 49th minute by tipping the winger's effort over the bar. 8*

Matty Cash

Cash came back into the starting XI six weeks after suffering a hamstring injury against Arsenal. He was an outlet down the right channel for Villa and got into some promising positions in the box . 7

Ezri Konsa

Konsa appeared to pick up a muscular injury early in the first half and was replaced by Carlos. N/A

Pau Torres

Torres was excellent in possession as he punched passes into the forwards and slalomed his way through United players to progress Villa up the pitch. 7

Lucas Digne

Digne has arguably been Villa's most consistent performer over the last year. He created a few chances with the crosses he sent into the box . 7

Ross Barkley

Barkley made his first start of the season this afternoon because Amadou Onana wasn't ready to feature after picking up an injury in midweek against Bayern. Alongside Tielemans, Barkley helped Villa keep the ball for extended periods. 7

Youri Tielemans

Tielemans is a key cog in Emery's system. He helped Villa beat the United press and nearly gave his side the lead by whipping an effort towards goal after being picked out from a corner. 7

Leon Bailey

Bailey passed a late fitness test to start against United, but wasn't particularly effective because he looks to still be carrying an injury. He was taken off for Duran in the 63rd minute. 6

Jaden Philogene

Philogene operated from the left this afternoon, which is his favoured position, but in what was an uninspiring performance from Villa, Philogene had few chances to get at his man and cause problems. His shot in second half added time was well blocked by Dalot.. 6

Morgan Rogers

Rogers was always going to cause United problems this afternoon because of the lack of mobility in their midfield, but his final ball was lacking. He came close to scoring in the first half when his strike whistled past Onana's front post. 6

Ollie Watkins

Watkins didn't get a chance to score in the first half and was quiet in the second period too, but that was down to a lack of service. 6

SUBS

Diego Carlos (for Konsa, 12'): He dealt with Hojlund well after coming on early in the match. 7

Jhon Duran (for Bailey, 62'): Duran put himself about, but didn't get a sight of goal to once again bag a winner for Villa. 6

Ian Maatsen (for Digne, 85'):N/A

Subs not used: Gauci, Nedeljkovic, Bogarde, Swinkels, Buendia, Young.
