Real Madrid respond to Kylian Mbappe links as Liverpool learn transfer stance

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez refused to comment on a possible move for Kylian Mbappe after his club's Spanish Super Cup win over Barcelona on Sunday evening.

Los Blancos earned an emphatic 4-1 victory over their rivals, which featured a hat-trick from Vinicius Junior, to offer a clear indication of the quality that exists within their current squad.

One player who has continuously been tipped to spearhead Real's attack is none other than Mbappe, who they attempted to sign during the summer of 2021 but saw three bids rejected by Paris Saint-Germain - the last of which was reportedly worth £172million.

Mbappe's future remains up in the air two-and-a-half years down the line, with the Frenchman's current deal set to expire at the end of the current season. The 25-year-old is free to negotiate with foreign clubs at present and sign a pre-contract agreement ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Asked to comment on how Madrid view a potential transfer for Mbappe, Perez told reporters: "Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid? This is not the day to comment on that topic Real Madrid are enjoying these players."

Liverpool, too, have been strongly linked with the 2018 World Cup winner, though will be all too aware of the complications that would come with attempting to strike an agreement with the forward on financial terms. The Telegraph recently claimed Mbappe is seeking a weekly salary worth £1.25m, a figure few clubs could afford to pay.

The current Ligue 1 top goalscorer is an admirer of the Reds, however, and has made this clear during previous interviews he has given. Discussing Jurgen Klopp's side in 2020, he told BBC Sport: "What Liverpool do in this moment is amazing, they're like a machine, they've found a rhythm and are like 'we play again, we play again'. They've lost zero games. When you watch you think everything's easy but that's not easy. The guys are focused, they play games every three days and they win, they win, they win."

Shedding light on how a move to Anfield was a consideration in 2022, Mbappe said to the Telegraph: “We talked a little bit, but not too much. We talked a little bit." Discussions were also held in 2017 before PSG won the race to recruit the attacker from Monaco.

“I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her! It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club," he revealed.
