Liverpool had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Arsenal in their top-of-the-table Premier League encounter at Anfield.

The Reds made the worst possible start to the most anticipated match of the season so far when Gabriel headed leaders Arsenal into a fourth-minute lead. But a moment of brilliance from Mohamed Salah, in the 29th minute, brought Liverpool level.

Jurgen Klopp's second-placed side pushed for a winner but honours ended even.

And here's how Ian Doyle rated the Reds' performance....

Alisson Becker 6

Unconvincing when dealing with Jesus cross early on and caught in no man’s land for Gabriel opener. Fielded rare Arsenal raids second half.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 8

Dealt well with Martinelli to the point the Arsenal man was replaced and shone with his distribution, not least for the equaliser. Should have scored when hitting bar second half, though.

Ibrahima Konate 8

Put in some crunching challenges early on as Arsenal threatened to take complete control can continued in same decisive vein. Some good blocks second half.

Virgil van Dijk 7

Impressive in the air and didn’t allow Jesus much space to breathe. Some passing was a bit ambitious, however.

Kostas Tsimikas 7

Wasn’t embarrassed by the dangerous Saka until being sent flying by the player into Klopp and having to depart with a shoulder injury. Subbed.

Wataru Endo 8

Threatened to be overrun in the opening exchanges but got to grips with the game and began to bring pressure and tempo. Used ball well in tight positions. Booked.

Dominik Szoboszlai 6

Not much impact in the final third but impressed with defensive efforts before break. Second half more of the same.

Curtis Jones 7

Ability to keep hold of the ball and show composure helped Liverpool belatedly settle. Subbed.

Mohamed Salah 7

Wasn’t distracted by early issues up against Zinchenko and won battle first half, and struck fine leveller after earlier hitting side-netting. Moved central for final quarter.

Cody Gakpo 7

Worked very hard in attempting to keep the ball up top and didn’t get much protection from the officials at times. Subbed.

Luis Diaz 6

A proper shift in the first half, particularly when pressing, but moment of magic eluded him going forward. Picked up an injury and subbed.

SUBS

Joe Gomez (for Tsimikas 35) 8

Pressed into unexpected service and took a while to adjust up against Saka, but excellent in both directions second half.

Darwin Nunez (for Gakpo 68) 6

Introduced on the left and sent one header over from corner.

Ryan Gravenberch (for Jones 68) 4

Unable to impact the game in a positive manner.

Harvey Elliott (for Diaz 68) 6

Lively enough in another cameo, this time from the right flank.
