Darwin Nunez’s quality has been called into question by Arsenal Fan TV ahead of Liverpool's Premier League showdown with the Gunners.

The Reds take on Mikel Arteta’s side at Anfield on Saturday. A win would put either club at the top of the league, heading into the traditional round of Boxing Day fixtures, with Liverpool currently a point behind league leaders Arsenal.

In terms of Liverpool’s forward line, Nunez has registered 15 goal contributions in 28 appearances, but has gone seven league games without a goal. Previewing the top of the table clash, AFTV presenter Cecil Jee Thomas insisted that the striker will struggle against Arsenal’s backline.

“He needs to have a big game, I hear that, but I think he’s washed,” he said. “Saliba, Gabriel, you think Nunez is gonna play at Anfield and cause us problems? All Liverpool fans say, ‘he’s strong, he’s physical, he’s got the attributes to be a good striker’.”

The host was joined by Liverpool supporter Fu Izzy, who defended Nunez and suggested he could be the biggest threat for Jurgen Klopp’s team. “Everyone’s laughing at him and this should give him the motivation. I think you need to watch out for him,” he said on the Box 2 Box show.

“There’s something I see in him. He has [got all the attributes] but I just don’t see the finishing at the moment. I see everything else, once he clocks finishing, it’s [over]. We’ve seen glimpses against Newcastle, you lot need to be aware. Don’t sleep on him.”

Nunez has not found the net in 11 games across all competitions, though he has provided three assists in that time. However, Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lignders recently stated that, despite his goal drought, the 24-year-old has improved from his debut campaign.

“Darwin is full of desire,” Lijnders said. “You see that in each game and if we would only judge players on goals that would be so unfair because in our way always when we reach our targets and when we were really there to compete it was always about the collective.”
