Mike Dean gives verdict on Dominic Calvert-Lewin disallowed Everton goal as presenter left stunned

Former Premier League referee Mike Dean has disagreed with the decision to rule out Dominic Calvert-Lewin's goal for Everton in their Premier League match at Tottenham Hotspur.

Calvert-Lewin fired low past Vicario in the Tottenham goal early in the second half and thought he had halved the deficit in North London after Andre Gomes dispossessed Emerson Royal before threading the Blues forward through.

However, referee Stuart Attwell was instructed to view the VAR monitor and in particular the incident surrounding Gomes and the Spurs full-back. The Portugal midfielder came through the back of Royal but it was adjudged that he did unfairly, following the intervention from Stockley Park.

But Dean, who officiated for over 28 years, felt that the officials at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium made the wrong decision.

"It's small contact but not enough for me to overturn it," Dean said speaking on Sky Sports. "It's minimal contact, they've recommended to look at it, the assistant referee had a good view originally would've said, 'no foul, no foul', they've shown a picture of it but it's very soft."

Sky Sports presenter Simon Thomas was in disbelief, he interjected: "Why on the earth have they overturned it?"

Everton found themselves two goals down in the first 20 minutes in the capital after Richarlison and Heung-Min Son were on target. Despite the deficit, Sean Dyche's side threatened with chances of their own and had a penalty shout turned down when Dwight McNeil was brought down.

The Blues continued to threaten the second-half with James Garner striking the outside of the post with a low volley before Gomes did reduce the arrears to make it 2-1.

Going into the clash with Ange Postecoglu's side, Everton were on a four-match winning league run and kept a clean sheet in all of their previous wins following the 3-0 defeat against Manchester United.
