Yankees’ Lou Trivino shut down from throwing in injury rehab setback

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Lou Trivino’s road back to The Bronx has hit a speed bump.

The Yankees reliever, who had been throwing bullpen sessions in his rehab from UCL reconstruction surgery, has been shut down with elbow inflammation.

Trivino saw Dr. Neal ElAttrache and the Yankees’ team doctors and underwent imaging recently that revealed the inflammation, according to a team spokesman.

He is currently in Week 2 of a three-to-four week shutdown.

“Nothing ligament[-related], all that’s good,” manager Aaron Boone said Sunday morning at Tropicana Field. “I think they feel like it’s kind of minor.”

Trivino, who had the elbow surgery last May, may have done too much too soon in his recovery.

He was already throwing bullpen sessions in February, when he re-signed with the Yankees on a one-year, $1.5 million deal with a $5 million team option for 2025.

Boone had recently said how Trivino was looking good by the time the team left spring training.

The Yankees were hoping the veteran could join their bullpen at some point this summer, but that has now been put on hold.

Trivino has been rehabbing in Tampa at the Yankees’ player development complex with fellow reliever Scott Effross, who is recovering from back surgery and Tommy John surgery.

Effross is expected to advance to facing hitters “soon,” Boone said, and could also be an option at some point this summer.

“Hopefully both of those guys come into the picture here at some point,” Boone said.
