Jets Week 13 report card: The season looks all but over

· New York Post

Grading the Jets’ 13-8 loss to the Falcons on Sunday:

Offense

The Jets failed to reach the end zone for the third time in five games and they stumbled their way through another loss. The Jets actually moved the ball a little bit in this game but only scored two field goals on offense. They had drives of 10 and 12 plays, which is progress for this group.

QB Tim Boyle (14 of 25, 148 yards, 1 INT, 56.8 QB rating) did not see a wide-open Garrett Wilson (3 catches, 50 yards) in the first half. QB Trevor Siemian (5 of 13, 66 yards, 3 fumbles, 55.3 rating) did not do much better than Boyle in relief. RB Breece Hall (13 rushes, 16 yards) continues to struggle.

Tim Boyle was benched after throwing for 148 yards and completing 14 of 25 passes and recording an interception. AP

Defense

This group has to play perfect football for the Jets to win a game. The unit gave up one touchdown and two field goals on Sunday and that was impossible to overcome. The defense scored its third safety of the season to start the scoring but did not manage any takeaways to give the offense a short field. The Falcons only completed one pass to a wide receiver in the entire game but TE Kyle Pitts (4 catches, 51 yards) and RB Bijan Robinson (3 catches, 26 yards) had some key catches. Falcons QB Desmond Ridder (12 of 27, 121 yards, 1 TD, 70.1 rating) managed the game.

Special Teams

Punter Thomas Morstead puts the Jets in scoring position more than their quarterbacks. His 47-yard punt in the first quarter pinned the Falcons deep and led to the safety. There were two costly penalties on special teams by Justin Hardee and Chazz Surratt. Kicker Greg Zuerlein added two more field goals to his season.

Coaching

Robert Saleh and his coaches continue to struggle to find any answer for the offensive issues. Yes, it is probably just a matter of not having a quarterback who is good enough but they have to figure some way to look more like a functional NFL offense. I thought Nathaniel Hackett tried more things Sunday and showed some creativity but it did not result in touchdowns. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich had a bounce-back week after a few tough games.
