Where Mykhailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez must improve as damning stats prove Chelsea transfer concern

The Chelsea pair, both signed in January 2023, have so far not lived up to their valuations after costing a combined total of nearly £200m and so both have obvious key areas to address.

Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk cost Chelsea more than a combined £195m last January yet many may argue that the club finds itself in a worse position after their arrival.

Of course, that is clearly not down to these two signings alone but both are part of the mass turnover of players at Stamford Bridge within the last 18 months under Todd Boehly. Neither has hit the heights they were expected to upon their arrival and Mauricio Pochettino is yet to get their pistons fully firing.

Fernandez and Mudryk have had ample game time, though, racking up 94 club appearances between them since their arrival. However, the pair have not produced the desired rate of output with just 18 goal contributions between them, despite Fernandez averagely playing further up the pitch under Pochettino.

His rate of interceptions has improved under his countryman, according to stats from BetMGM . But the number of chances he regularly creates have dropped while his final-third passes and amount of shots have slightly dropped.

Fernandez’s wonderful free-kick in Wednesday’s 3-1 FA Cup replay win over Aston Villa was his sixth goal in a Chelsea shirt having failed to score in 22 appearances last season. He has only managed to tally one assist in 29 appearances this term, though, having notched two last term.

Meanwhile, Mudryk has three goals and three assists in 19 Premier League matches this season, which is better than last campaign’s Chelsea drought but still below the level expected of an £89m signing.

He is averaging fewer shots a game than his fellow attackers and has started just three games since Christmas as a result. With so many wide options and the likes of Cole Palmer fourshing, the Ukraine star will need to up his numbers if he is to regain his spot.

Record signing Fernandez and expensive Mudryk both have clear areas of improvement that, when addressed, will surely help arrest Chelsea’s slump and fire them back up towards the top end of the table - or else Boehly risks further embarrassment over price tags.
