You'll be happy with the result but what did you make of the performance?

Pleased with getting the win and I thought that we probably deserved it in the end for our endeavours. Fair to say the first half wasn't great. Part of that is because Brighton are a good side, they're well coached and very disciplined and we weren't. We just took a few liberties with our football, our effort and our workrate, there were a few things that we have been really good at this year but we just didn't do it in the first half.

I thought the second half was a lot better. It's always difficult when you're chasing a game because the opposition can catch you on the break, but I thought for the most part we handled it well and I'm pleased. We had guys who could come in and make an impact in the game and that happened.

How important is it for you to now have those options from the bench and real game-changing ones?

Yeah, very important. I think at the beginning of the year we won a few games late on because of that and we have that capability now of putting guys on who can make an impact. I thought they did today and it also keeps guys on their toes if they're not performing and gives me some options.

How much did the team draw on what happened at Brentford in the last game here when they were in a similar position being behind?

I don't question the guys' character or mentality. We've done that a number of times this year but I was really disappointed the way we went about it in the first half. You can't get away from that. We've got to this point because of certain things we do and I was disappointed we went away from that, but you can't question the character. The response was very positive. It's easy in that kind of scenario to go into your shell and feel sorry for yourself but I've never felt that way with this group. They always respond in the right way when given that sort of guidance. I felt they took it on board in the second half and made a difference to the game.

Now you've got players back will the momentum build now?

Well it should be and I said yesterday that you've still got to do it. Maybe we were guilty of that and just thought we could roll out there today because we've got a strong squad and think that happens, but there's opposition out there and Brighton are a good side. We didn't have the right mindset and it doesn't matter what kind of squad you've got, if you go away from the important things that get you to where you are then it becomes meaningless.

I think the second half was better and that gives us a little bit more impetus and momentum to keep going. I guess it keeps everyone on their toes because we do have options.

The focus has been on late goals recently but does this show why your teams play the way they do, trying to score to the very end?

I wasn't trying to be flippant the other day but if you look at all my teams historically they've always done that because the way we approach it is the clock and the scoreboard shouldn't dictate how you play, so if that's your mentality... you should always be looking for goals irrespective of whether we're winning 1-0 or losing 1-0.

Now, sometimes that feels counter-intuitive when you're winning 1-0 but I think it helps you in games like this when you're chasing the game because you don't have to change anything, there's no instructions from me, the players know what we do anyway, so it doesn't mean a major shift. If you're trying to become a team that's dominant and wins games of football I just felt I'd rather err on that side, rather than trying to protect things that you have.

Were you confident in bringing on those subs to make a difference in the end?

I'm not really sure about confident... I was putting on some good players, and guys who can make an impact. But again they've got to do that. Especially in that midfield, front third, we've been pretty limited lately in terms of what we can do. Just to give us a little bit more energy. Obviously Brighton were doing really well but they were working really hard to stay in the game. You know they're going to get tired, the fact that we could bring on two attacking players who are going to be a threat.

It maybe looks simple but that ball that Sonny plays, that's a world-class player in a clutch moment, finds the right pass, you can't do that if you can't bring him on, if it's somebody else. Even Brennan getting on the far post, we've helped him to do that. It's not about confidence... I feel like with the squad we have for today and hopefully moving towards, we do have that ability irrespective of where the game's at, to finish games strong.

Any fresh injuries from the game?

No I don't think so. Destiny went off but I'm not sure if it was cramp, but everyone else was OK as far as I know.

Was it fatigue with Son and why you used him from the bench?

We were worried about fatigue, that's why we brought him on in the second half. He was ready to play, wanted to play. If you look, two of their games went to extra-time, last game was pretty draining as well. So the fact that we had options, if we were desperate he probably would have started. But we had other options, that meant we could protect him. I think it was better for him that he came on and played the minutes he did.

Is that what a captain is all about, still coming back from that kind of disappointment at the Asian Cup to deliver in big moments?

Maybe the nation he plays for works against him but I think he's a world-class player. You look at his record in the Premier League, the toughest league in the world, his goal contributions irrespective of how the team's gone through the time he's been here have always been right up there.

Even this year, before he left, I think he was probably the best attacking player in the competition, just my opinion obviously. Certainly he'd be up there. He's a world class player. I thought we did well to cover his absence. Richy obviously stepped up in terms of goal threat, and a few other players, but to have a world-class player for the run-in is brilliant for us.
