Jordan Pickford makes Newcastle feelings clear after Anthony Gordon penalty save

Jordan Pickford insists he took no extra joy from his penalty save against Newcastle despite the abuse he gets from Geordie fans.

The former Sunderland keeper and North East native denied former Everton forward Anthony Gordon from the spot to help the Toffees earn a point against Newcastle. England No 1 Pickford endures plenty of stick from Newcastle fans and did so throughout the goalless draw at Goodison.

He said: “I just crack on with me game. I know they give me stick. I stay focussed. I learned from the past, I stay focussed and I want to do my best for the badge. They can give me stick, I’m only up the road from them.”

Gordon, who left Everton to join Newcastle in 2023, was booed by the home fans throughout and the cheer when he missed the penalty was akin to a goal celebration. Pickford added: “When we play for England and Ant has been here before, he’s executed pens perfectly. I fancied it tonight and luckily I went the right way.”

Pickford also hailed Everton’s squad mentality, with the Toffees keeper believing the fact that players like James Garner stepped up to play out of position shows their resilience.

Everton were without Jarrad Branthwaite at the back after he only returned from injury last week for their first league win of the season against Crystal Palace so Michael Keane was back in.

But Vitaliy Mykolenko was also ruled out and with Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson already missing, Sean Dyche’s side were short of full-back options.

Garner slotted in at right-back while Ashley Young switched to the left side as Everton got a point against Newcastle to move them two clear of the relegation zone.

Pickford said: “I think that’s why everyone has to be at their best because opportunities come. Jarrad had an excellent end to the season last season and he came in last week and did quality but then picked up a little knock.

“Keano has to come back in and take his chance, he did tonight. I thought Keano did mint. That’s the team, that’s the squad mentality.

“Everyone has to step in. Jimmy Garner did unbelievable at right back. Doing jobs for the team, it’s about the badge more than anything.”
