Coco Gauff broke down in tears at the Olympics as a row with the umpire and supervisor overshadowed her defeat to Donna Vekic.

The world No.2 lost the first set on a tiebreak against Vekic and was broken in the second after a controversial moment. Trailing 2-3 in the second set and facing break point, Vekic's shot was initially called out mid-rally. It was immediately self-corrected and Gauff sent the ball into the net, with the point awarded to the world No. 21.

The American argued she was affected by an incorrect call and stormed to the umpire's chair.

"For me, the call didn't affect your shot," he responded. But a furious Gauff retorted: "He called it out before I hit it. That's why I went up on the ball."

The 20 year-old continued to argue her point and the supervisor was called to the court. Commentator Miles Maclagan said: "I think the umpire has made the correct call. I have sympathy for both because it happened so quickly and you're not necessarily looking for it either,"

Supervisor Clare Wood arrived and Gauff turned her attention to her: "You have to understand, he called it out before I hit it," she continued.

"What's the rule? It's not even a millisecond, he called it when I hit the ball. I understand if it was the same time but it was before. It's not even a perception.

"I always have to advocate for myself. It happened to me in July, it happened to me here. This isn't fair. This isn't fair. I feel like I'm getting cheated on constantly in this game. I constantly feel like that and then I have to argue. No because I do and then you guys apologise after."

As Gauff vented her frustration, co-commentator Naomi Cavaday chimed in: "Clare Wood just telling her to be careful here with the language she's using. Vekic is waiting. We don't have video review for the players to use for this. It is a judgement call.

"If Gauff had hit the ball into the court it would be a replay but because she missed the shot, the point has been awarded to her opponent because the call was wrong.

"Gauff's argument is that it impacted her shot and the call made her miss. When it happens on the baseline there is such little time between the bounce and your swing that the most likely situation is that the call has not impacted your swing because it's such a reaction, it's so quick, there's no time for it."

The atmosphere turned sour with boos echoing around Court Philippe-Chatrier as the match resumed, and Vekic was overheard reassuring the crowd: "It's not my fault".

Following the heated exchange, the American failed to secure another game, leading to Vekic clinching a surprising victory with a score of 7-6(7) 6-2.
