Federico Chiesa’s omission from the Juventus squad that took on Brest in Saturday’s friendly has fanned speculation that the winger is set to exit the club amid tentative links with Manchester United.

The Italian, who was spotted training individually this week, has been tipped to leave Turin this summer with just a year left on his contract and a renewal yet to be agreed. A number of Premier League clubs have been touted as potential suitors including United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

A winger is not on the list of transfer priorities at United this summer with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho seen as sufficient cover on the left. Chiesa can play on either flank, albeit has traditionally been played more on the left.

As for the right wing, Amad’s resurgence and Jadon Sancho’s return to the first-team stocks up options, with Antony currently considered Erik ten Hag’s preferred pick in the role. Chiesa has also been used as a supporting striker.

However, captain Bruno Fernandes has the attacking midfield role on lockdown while Mason Mount has the ability to deputise there. At 26, Chiesa would be seeking regular minutes, which United would not be able to guarantee under current circumstances.

Ineos is being cautious in balancing finances this summer with overspending under the previous regime pulling the club close to Premier League spending limits. It is thought that United could be operating on a net budget of just £50million this summer, with the current figure circa £59 after several sales.

Around £95m has already been spent on striker Joshua Zrikzee and defender Leny Yoro, who is now out for three months with a fractured metatarsal. United insist that transfer plans are not being accelerated as a result but there are fears Ten Hag would be left short if another centre-back is not acquired.

Matthijs de Ligt has already agreed personal terms but United are yet to come to a fee settlement with Bayern Munich. Teammate and right-back Noussair Mazraoui is being targeted by United with reports mooting that a second joint bid for the pair is being planned having seen a first offer rebuffed.

United are also interested in Paris Saint-Germain playmaker Manuel Ugarte, with a midfielder one of the three primary areas highlighted for reinforcement, alongside centre-back and striker.

United will need to make sales in order to capture all transfer targets this summer with little room for free-and-easy spending, making a move for Chiesa unlikely despite his reputed £21m value.
