Who is Lucas Bergvall? Midfielder linked with Manchester United transfer after trial at club

Erik ten Hag will be hopeful of strengthening his Man United squad during the January transfer window and has been linked with a move for the Swedish youngster

Manchester United are being strongly linked with a move for Swedish sensation Lucas Bergvall.

The 17-year-old is currently playing for Djurgarden in his home country and has caught the eye of major European clubs with his performances over the last year and could soon be signing for a new side. Had things worked out differently, the teenager may have already been on the books of United.

Bergvall is understood to have previously been on trial with the Red Devils, though that was far as matters progressed and no transfer followed. It has been reported by 90min that United are now keen on Bergvall once again, but who exactly is this youngster taking Sweden by storm?

Bergvall progressed through the ranks at Swedish side IF Brommapojkarna before joining his current club in December 2022. Several substitute appearances were handed to the promising central midfielder, who made his first start against Hacken in May 2023. Following his display in this 1-0 victory, Swedish newspaper 'Aftonbladet' named Bergvall as the standout player on the pitch and tipped him to become "Djurgarden's biggest transfer ever".

Djurgarden's sporting director, Bo Andersson, last month confirmed Barcelona had opened talks over a possible deal and said: "I can confirm that we have been in contact and dialogue with Barcelona, but it’s not a negotiation yet. There was some contact with Barcelona last week but this week we haven’t spoken to them."

Speaking out on his future via Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo, Bergvall has attempted to play down the situation to focus on his football. He remarked: "I know there is a lot of speculation, but I'm trying to focus on the national team and I'm happy to be here for the January tour. Now I'm a Djurgarden player. I am proud that my club is asking for so much money. But Djurgarden and my agents will take care of that. I don't know where I will play next season."

It has been reported by 90min that United are planning to hold talks with Djurgarden over a possible deal for Bergvall. The report states United are keen to bring the talented midfielder, who is reported to be a fan of the club, to the Premier League.

As well as United and Barcelona, Bundesliga duo Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt have also been credited as possible destinations. Any deal for the teenager, though, is thought to be likely to wait until the summer with the player reported to be valued at around €8million to €10million (£6.8m to £8.5m).

It is not only at club level that Bergvall has made his mark, having this month made his first appearance for Sweden's senior national side. He played 31 minutes of a friendly versus Estonia, representing a huge moment in his professional career. Before this achievement, the youngster represented his country in various age groups from under-15s up to under-21 level.
