College football odds, picks, predictions for 2023-24 bowl season: Computer model backs Oregon, Penn State

SportsLine's advanced computer model has revealed its 2023-24 college football bowl game picks and predictions

· CBS Sports

Unique matchups will be a staple of the 2023-24 college football bowl schedule, but there are a couple of games which are throwbacks to yesteryear. The Texas Bowl on Dec. 27 sees Texas A&M as a 2-point favorite over Oklahoma State, per the SportsLine consensus college football odds, as the former Big 12 rivals will share a field once again. The next night will see Miami (FL) favored by 1.5 points over Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl. These programs were rivals in the Big East, back when that conference had football, and this will be their first meeting in 20 years.

The Hurricanes are 11-0 all-time versus the Scarlet Knights, while A&M sports an 18-9 record against OK State. Series history will matter to some when making 2023-24 college football bowl picks, but what other factors and trends should matter to all college football bowl bettors? Before locking in any college football bowl picks on those games or others, be sure to see the latest college football predictions from SportsLine's proven model.

The SportsLine Projection Model simulates every FBS college football game 10,000 times. Since its inception, it has generated a strong profit of well over $2,000 for $100 players on its top-rated college football picks against the spread. The model enters bowl season with a profitable 13-9 record on top-rated spread picks this season. Anyone who has followed it has seen strong returns.

Now, it has turned its attention to the latest college football odds for bowl season and locked in picks for every FBS matchup. Head here to see every pick.

Top college football predictions for bowl season

One of the college football picks the model is high on during bowl season: No. 10 Penn State (-3.5) covers against No. 11 Ole Miss in the 2023 Peach Bowl on Dec. 30 at noon ET. The Nittany Lions have been dominant defensively all season long. Penn State has given up only six points over its last two games, which includes a 42-0 victory over Michigan State on Nov. 24.

Penn State's defense ranks third in the nation in passing yards per game, giving up just 153.6 yards through the air on average. In addition, Penn State has won 20 consecutive games when favored. The Nittany Lions are also 8-0 against the spread in their last eight games played in December. SportsLine's model expects those trends to continue as the Nittany Lions cover the spread in nearly 70% of simulations.

Another prediction: No. 8 Oregon (-17.5) cruises to a blowout win over No. 23 Liberty in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. ET. Blowout wins were the norm for Oregon this year, outside of facing Washington, as the Ducks' average margin of victory is 32 points per game. Oregon is the only FBS team to score 30-plus in every game, and it has a successful history against Group of Five teams like Liberty. The Ducks have won six straight games versus Group of Five squads, including a 45-point victory in their one such game in 2023 versus Hawaii.

Liberty is just 1-4 against AP Top 25 teams since joining FBS, including three straight defeats. Its average margin of defeat in those four losses is 16.5 points, and none of those games came against teams ranked as high as No. 8 Oregon. Overall, the Flames sport a 4-16 SU record against Power Five teams. Liberty is taking a major step up in competition against an Oregon squad which utterly dominated every opponent except one. That's a big reason why the model has the Ducks (-17.5) winning by more than three touchdowns and covering nearly 60% of the time. See which other teams the model likes here.
