Airdrie star Callum Fordyce targets more goals after 'disappointing return' so far
The Diamonds defender is up and running for the season after his clincher against Inverness
by Paul Thomson, https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/authors/paul-thomson/ · Daily RecordCallum Fordyce kicked off 2024 with his first goal of the season for Airdrie and he is determined to grab a few more before the campaign is out.
The Diamonds' player/assistant manager admits he had become frustrated by a lack of goals this season, but the defender broke his duck with the clincher in Tuesday's 2-0 win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
Headers from Fordyce and Nikolay Todorov did the damage, sending Airdrie up to fourth in the Championship, and the 31-year-old hopes this is just the start for him this term.
Fordyce, who celebrated his goal with his family at full-time, said: "I've been disappointed in myself recently. I've had a few off the line and had a couple of attempts I should have scored at the start of the season.
"To finally get there and get that monkey off the back is great.
"I usually get to five or six in a season, so hopefully I can keep it going and get more."
That is now back-to-back wins for the Diamonds in their push for promotion and Fordyce says they are starting to perform to their potential again.
On Tuesday's win, he said: "We deserved it over the 90 minutes, we were back to our old selves.
"We dominated most of the game and it was a great start to the year and the third quarter.
"Inverness are a good side. In the last few games we have limited sides to very little. We conceded a penalty and that's been the only goal we've conceded in the last three games, so we are on the right track.
"All we can do is keep progressing and see where it takes us."
Airdrie now welcome league leaders Raith to New Broomfield on Saturday.
