Cambuslang Rangers boss Paul McColl was pleased to survive a goalkeeping crisis – which saw them play striker Scott Robson in goal – to batter Craigmark Burntonians 5-1 in their West of Scotland Second Division opener.
The Somervell Park side were without regular shot-stoppers Campbell Walker and Calum Dillon, forcing them to bring in trialist keeper Sam Gibson. But Gibson had to come off injured at half-time and McColl had no option but to throw Robson between the sticks.
In the end, Camby ran out comfortable winners with Carlos Lyon bagging a brace alongside strikes from Godson Nechi, Craig Johnston and Taylor Fabian.
And McColl said: “Two of our goalkeepers were away on holiday so we used a trialist, but he ended up getting smashed by Craigmark’s big centre-forward, who came at him like a big bull.
“I have no idea how he didn’t get a straight red. Then he took another sore one from one of their players and he had to come off at half-time, forcing me to put a striker in goal.
“But we played well against a Craigmark team who are just coming together. We are a new team as well but up front we are pretty good. They struggled to contain Carlos and Godson so I was pleased. Carlos missed a penalty before he scored so it could have been more, but he was great for us. It’s a good start for us and we’d take a 5-1 win all day.”
Camby now host Lesmahagow tonight before travelling to Kilsyth Rangers on Saturday, and McColl believes there’s still plenty to come from his side, with so many players out or still on holiday.
He added: “Carlos and Godson are two big, strong boys and good players. Godson is certainly a bit of a handful. Everyone seems to want to kick him but it doesn’t work on him. Carlos is busy, a good finisher who gets himself into good positions to score.
“We’ve played well with maybe three or four boys not there. We didn’t have Scott Cowan, Owen McGinty, Tony Kerr and our goalkeepers. The likes of Jordan McMillan and Andy Geggan haven’t played a lot of football so there is more to come from us.
“There’s a few decent teams in the league so we just need to take each game as it comes.Lesmahagow and Kilsyth will be tough games, but if we could win three in a row that would really set us up well for the season.”
