Meme makers had a field day as SunRisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians went on a six-hitting spree, shattering plenty of Indian Premier League records in an IPL 2024 match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday, March 27. Fans on social media were at their cheekiest best as they flooded the internet with memes that matched the entertainment on the field.

Hardik Pandya was the centre of attention on Wednesday as the young captain was under pressure in his second game as the captain of the Mumbai Indians after the SunRisers Hyderabad decided to unleash carnage mode with the bat. It was Hardik, who won the toss and opted to field and the decision did not work as expected as SunRisers posted 277, the highest-ever total in the history of the tournament, breaking an 11-year-old record held by Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Travis Head's sensational knock on his debut for SunRisers Hyderabad brought back memories of his World Cup 2023 final special against India. And it was enough fodder for the meme makers as the Mumbai Indians looked clueless on how to stop the carnage.

Captain Hardik Pandya was criticised during the SunRisers Hyderabad innings for holding back Jasprti Bumrah, their best bowler. Bumrah walked into the attack in the 4th over, by which Head found his range, taking the team total to 40 for 0. Strangely, Bumrah bowled only one over until the 13th over of the innings and by then SunRisers had gone past 170, thanks to some sensational big-hitting from Head and young Abhishek Sharma, who smashed 7 sixes for his 23-ball 63.

From jokes about Hardik Pandya's captaincy to highlighting Travis Head's liking for a team in Blue, the memes were enjoyable.

The apparent tension in the Mumbai Indians' outlook on the field after the sensational change in captaincy in the lead-up to the contest also added intrigue as the entire team look lost for ideas when SunRisers batters sent them flying into the stands.

SunRisers played only 22 dot balls in their quota of 20 overs as none of the bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, was able to limit the damage.

Heinrich Klaasen added salt to Mumbai's wounds as he tore into the bowling attack in the end overs, hitting 7 sixes for his 34-ball 80 not out, his second successive fifty-plus score in IPL 2024.

Mumbai Indians came up with a strong reply with the bat, led by a sensational 34-ball 64 from Tilak Varma, 13-ball 34 from Ishan Kishan and 12-ball 26 from ex-captain Rohit Sharma. Mumbai kept themselves in the hunt as they reached 185 for 4 in 15 overs as the IPL match in Hyderabad broke the record for the most aggregate runs in a match and the most sixes hit in an encounter.
