Thomas Tuchel outlines three Man Utd problems as Red Devils crash out of Champions League

Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel has offered sympathy to Erik ten Hag after Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League and finished bottom of the group

Thomas Tuchel believes Manchester United lack 'personality, quality and width' after his Bayern Munich side ran out 1-0 winners at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils needed to win and hope Copenhagen's game against Galatasaray ended in a draw to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League. However, United couldn't even do their job and bowed out of Europe altogether, finishing rock bottom of Group A.

Kingsley Coman's second-half strike proved the difference on a flat night in Manchester as Erik ten Hag's side suffered their 12th defeat in all competitions this season. After dumping them out of the competition, Bayern boss Tuchel offered his assessment of United and Ten Hag in his post-match press conference.

When quizzed about whether he felt sympathy for Ten Hag, Tuchel said: "Almost always I feel sympathy for the other coach. But within competition we try everything to win our matches, this is why we are and this is what it is, these are the rules of high-level sports, we play at the highest level to win our matches.

"Of course I have sympathy. I think he has a lot of key players injured for a decisive match now, that you can see then they lack this kind of personality and also the quality and maybe the width to change games from the bench. I think you could see that.

"Yeah, it's not an easy time but I'm pretty sure he knows what to do next, he knows how to influence his team, he does not need my advice. He does not need my clapping on the shoulders.

"He's experienced enough to go through it. I had not such a nice moment last Saturday, sometimes you feel very lonely as a coach I can tell you. In general I feel sympathy for all of my colleagues because I know what it takes to keep a thing going."

Copenhagen ended up finishing the group in second to qualify for the knockout phase of the competition. Following their 1-0 defeat at Parken, Galatasaray will go into the Europa League leaving United without European football after ending the group with just one win from six fixtures.

Ten Hag offered an explanation on why his side failed to progress, despite having a much bigger budget than Copenhagen. "So, I look to my team and, yeah, we had opportunities in games and we were in winning positions. I think we scored many goals," the Dutchman said.

"But then also, we have to see we gave it away sometimes by individual errors, but by not one player, but by more players and not every time the same. So, we gave the opponent opportunities to return. But if you assess that, also we had very good spells in such games but we have to do better.

"And the facts are we have not enough points. So, that is of course disappointing. We are disappointed as a group, and as a manager I’m disappointed. We should have done better."
