Paul Scholes highlights Man Utd's 'real issue' as pressure mounts on Erik ten Hag

Manchester United have endured a miserable season so far that and Erik ten Hag has a number of problems he needs to address, but Paul Scholes has picked one standout issue

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has identified what he feels is the 'real issue' plaguing Erik ten Hag's side this season.

The Premier League giants have lost more games than they have won across all competitions this term, having ben defeated 13 times across all competitions. United's most recent outing also ended in defeat, when they were beaten 2-0 by West Ham at the London Stadium last Saturday.

It was a particularly dismal display from United, who failed to really lay a glove on the Hammers before late goals from Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus ensured all three points remained in east London. In turn, pressure is beginning to mount on Ten Hag and Scholes has analysed where he feels United are going wrong.

The Old Trafford icon believes that United's lack of attacking threat is an issue Ten Hag desperately needs to address, before it is too late for his reign as boss. Scholes claimed: "United have got real problems.

"Goalscoring is a real issue. It’s four games without a goal and without creating really. Second half I can’t think of a save that the goalkeeper has had to make. Sometimes you go through seasons where one or two of your forwards are struggling with confidence and can’t score goals but it’s every single one of them.

"You talk about [Scott] McTominay with six goals as your leading goalscorer, he’s a midfield player. The forward players have got to stand up, find some confidence from somewhere and bring some threat to the team. There’s no threat in the team."

Manchester United have scored just 18 goals this season - the joint-lowest of any side in the top 15

United's form in front of goal is a serious headache for Ten Hag, with the Red Devils the lowest goalscorers out of any side within the top 15 in the Premier League table. 18 goals from 18 games as a collective is a feeble tally for a side of United's stature.

As a result, Ten Hag's men languish as low as eighth and know anything less than a win in their next clash could prove to be a significant blow to the Dutchman's reign. United's Boxing Day schedule sees them welcome an in-form Aston Villa to Old Trafford.

Unai Emery's team could potentially go top of the table with a win, meaning United will need to fix some of the issues at both ends of the pitch to help halt the rut.
