Bluebridge ferry back in service, as investigation continues into breakdown

Report from RNZ
The Bluebridge ferry that lost power in Cook Strait last week is sailing again, despite its owner not knowing what caused the blackout.

The Connemara blacked out after leaving Wellington on Thursday night and drifted for more than two hours off the south coast before being rescued by tug boats.

Maritime NZ placed it under a detention notice the next day.

Strait NZ said the notice was lifted last night, and the ship is safe to sail following a rigorous inspection. It said the investigation into what caused the power loss is ongoing.

Report from RNZ – September 27
Bluebridge cancelled five Cook Strait ferry sailings today as the inspection of its Connemara ship continues.

The Connemara has been undergoing checks by Maritime New Zealand since it lost power during a late night sailing on 19 September and had to be towed back to Wellington Harbour.

Bluebridge said it is working through the required process to ensure the problem is rectified and safety is its highest priority.

It said it did not have a confirmed timeframe for when the Connemara would return to service, and further changes to the schedule were required over the coming days.

Buebridge cancelled its 2am, 1.30pm and 8.30pm Wellington to Picton sailings today, as well as the 7.45am Picton to Wellington.

Bluebridge customers would be advised of any cancellations via email or text, and passengers could change their booking online or by calling 0800 844 844. Anyone who preferred to cancel their booking could still do so, and should fill out the refund request form sent to affected passengers.
