Heartbroken neighbours of a couple found dead in their Greenock home told how they had just become grandparents.

Neil, 57, and Alison McLaughlin, 53, were discovered at Banff Road in the Inverclyde town on January 5. Their deaths are currently being treated as unexplained and police say investigations are ongoing.

Neighbours told how the quiet couple, who would always say hello, had become grandparents for the first time.

One neighbour told the Record: "They were a nice, quiet couple. It's very quiet around here but everyone knows each other to say hello to.

"They would always say hello when they were out at the car or bringing their shopping in.

"They had recently become grandparents, their daughter gave birth not long ago. My heart absolutely breaks for her and her wee one.

"It's awful at any time of year but especially after Christmas."

They continued: "It has been such a shock to hear something like this has happened so close."

The neighbour, who did not wish to be identified, said police on the street hadn't told locals it was a double death.

She added: "The police just told us they were dealing with an incident and never told us anything else about it.

"When something like this happens to your neighbours, you should be told what's gone on, it's shocking.

"My daughter, who lives in England, saw it on the news. We live just a few doors away and they've not told us anything."

It's understood Alison, 53, worked at the Costcutter store in the town's Fife Road, a short walk from her home. Her colleagues have been left devastated by the loss.

On Monday, police continued to stand guard outside the family home. Two officers dressed in hi-vis jackets and caps were stationed at the entrance to the close.

Residents told the Record four forensics teams were spotted coming and going from the property as officers investigated the crime scene.

Detective Inspector Gordon Smith, of Police Scotland, said previously: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Neil and Alison. We are providing their families with specialist support at this incredibly difficult time. They have asked for privacy.
