'I've been spelling my own name wrong for nearly 30 years!'

A man who attended his grandfather's funeral received the surprise of a lifetime when he stumbled upon a 50-year-old family secret.

In a resurfaced Reddit post, the man revealed the moment he discovered aged 29 that he had been spelling his last name - DeLucio - wrong his entire life.

He said he uncovered the error when he saw a list of his late grandfather's grandchildren's names that had been given to him by the funeral organizer.

'The names looked fine, except for the fact that our last name is actually spelled with a capital L,' he wrote in the post.

After he received a 'confused' look from his uncle, the secret was finally exposed - the man's last name was actually spelt Delucio.

A story of a man who spelled his last name wrong for 29 years resurfaced online
The man learned that his last named DeLucio was actually spelled Delucio while attending his grandfather's funeral

The Reddit post writer said that while the family didn't care about the 'error,' the 'l' was supposed to be capitalized.

But his uncle insisted the l was not capitalized, and that's when the 29-year-old seemingly became stern and straightforward.

He told his uncle: 'I'm pretty sure I know how to spell my own last name. You don't share our last name but I assure you, it's a capital L.'

The grieving grandson then wrote that his father 'started acting strange' during the debate over how to spell DeLucio.

His father eventually came out and told his son that he purposely changed the spelling from Delucio to DeLucio.

'He said that our name was actually Delucio, but that when he was in 3rd or 4th grade he decided he wanted to look cool, and capitalized the "l" on his own,' he wrote.

'He added: 'He never got caught, legal agencies apparently didn't notice/care, and the name stuck.'

'I've been living my father's lie for 30 years, the Reddit writer exclaimed.

Other Reddit users couldn't stop commenting on the post, which was first published eight years ago, with hilarious responses to the last name revelation.

One person wrote: 'Look on the bright side, now you sound like a mob boss with that last name.'

Another person wrote: 'At least you didn't find out your name is actually Delicio, then you'd be a pizza.'

Some Reddit users commented on whether the spelling actually makes 'any sort of difference in practical terms.'

Users also shared their own stories similar to the 29-year-old's revelation.

One Reddit commentator said: 'My father in law got a copy of his birth certificate and realized his name wasn't even James.

'He was born into a very large Puerto Rican family in the early 50s, and was always called James at school and at home.'

'When he got his birth certificate in the last five or so years his name was listed as something else. James is probably the anglicized version.'

Several Reddit users wrote their opinions while The Mirror readers began telling their own name error stories in the comment sections of the resurfaced stories

The post received more comments when it first resurfaced on the Mirror website last March.

A few readers shared their own stories of name errors, one of which was possibly a years-old-secret to some of their family members.

'My ex husband's family were split on spelling their name. It's very uncommon so let's just imagine my grandfather in-law was called Ackrets; one son used that spelling while the other used Ackret,' a reader wrote on March 30.

They added: 'To confuse me even further, my nana had known the family 40 years earlier and insisted it was Ackreyd.'

Another reader commented: 'My mother's maiden name has several different spellings in the family (very long story). It's a real pain as it's often a security question.'
