Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra photos tipped to have iPhone-esque 2x default resolution
by Deirdre O'Donnell · NotebookcheckThe Galaxy S23 Ultra is a flagship smartphone with a 200MP camera sensor - however, it also has the option of shooting in 12MP or 50MP, defaulting to the lowest of those 3 resolution choices unless the user intervenes in its settings.
That phenomenon is due to the process of pixel binning, baked into premium 50MP or 200MP sensors in order to optimize detail while keeping image files at a reasonable size. However, according to the leaker Ahmad Qwaider on Twitter/X, the S24 Ultra will upgrade to 24MP as a minimum resolution, as also seen in the iPhone 15 series.
Qwaider also claims that the upcoming 2024 Samsung flagship smartphone will also support the experimental "ND Filter" feature - however, that, unfortunately, is a software feature applied to images in the RAW format and not a literal hardware filter.
In fact, the option is already found on the S23 Ultra, in the Labs menu of its camera's Expert RAW app. Its successor might also bring something new to the table, however: Photo Remaster, which "adjusts the image and shows more details".
