Assetto Corsa Competizione console crossplay update is here
by Stefan L · tsaA big update for Assetto Corsa Competizione has arrived, with developer Kunos Simulazioni adding crossplay between the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version of the game.
Gamers playing Assetto Corsa Competizione on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S can now play together across all online modes. This includes the standard Public Multiplayer races, Competition Servers and the Private Leagues that feature bespoke rules and racing clubs.
While it’s widely regarded as one of the best racing sim platforms out there, Assetto Corsa Competizione has had a somewhat bumpy ride on console. Originally releasing on PS4 and Xbox One in 2020, it suffered from a 30fps frame rate, and some key omissions to the game experience. a free upgrade to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S come in early 2022 that pushed the game forward significantly. On the current gen, you get 60fps gaming, support for private multiplayer lobbies and more.
Adding crossplay into the mix is fantastic to see for the game’s longevity, though you might be scratching your head why there’s no PC crossplay. Essentially, the PC and console versions of Assetto Corsa have always been separate projects for Kunos, and it’s probably too late to try and combine and reconcile the two online communities together without a major overhaul and awkward resets or account merging. Even then, there could be competitive advantages to playing on PC over console, though much less of a difference than in a crossplay FPS, I’m sure.
In our review of Assetto Corsa Competizione for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, I said, “Where the original console release of Assetto Corsa Competizione had some huge caveats hanging over it, the game’s release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S brings it up to spec, effectively matching the PC version. It still has some weaknesses in presentation and structure for new players in particular, but once you get into the groove, it’s one of the best sim racers you can buy right now.”
