In Short

  • WhatsApp voice note transcription is out for Android users
  • It's available in five languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Hindi
  • WhatsApp guarantees that personal voice messages are protected with end-to-end encryption

WhatsApp has been working to bring an in-chat voice note transcription feature for a long time, and now it is finally here. The feature eliminates the step of going to a third-party app for transcription for a WhatsApp voice note. With the passing time, the go-to-messenger app is making it more user-friendly. The most recent update offers a voice note transcription feature that can immediately write down the voice messages. This feature will save the users time by noting down whatever is said in the voice note. This feature is even more interesting for Indians as the newly launched feature can also transcribe a voice note in Hindi, among other languages. However, this feature is only available on Android for now.

WhatsApp voice note transcript: How to use

WhatsApp's voice note transcript feature is accessible within chats and can be enabled through the app's settings. The feature is exclusive to the mobile app and does not support the web version. It's available in five languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Hindi, allowing users to transcribe voice notes directly on their phones.

Here is how you can activate the feature. Go to the settings on your WhatsApp app. Click on the Chats and you will see a toggle bar to activate the feature. Once activated, a transcription prompt appears below voice notes, allowing users to manually initiate the process. Upon clicking, WhatsApp downloads the text file and displays the transcription results below the original voice note.

Now, after activating, how to use it? Let's see. Once you get a voice note, you will also get an option about whether you would like to transcribe it or not. This option will only be visible after you have activated the feature. When you click on the transcribe option, it will download a file and the text of the voice note will be reflected below the voice note.

WhatsApp guarantees that personal voice messages are protected with end-to-end encryption, ensuring only the sender and recipient can access them. Even WhatsApp itself cannot listen to the messages. Additionally, the transcription text file is private and cannot be shared, further enhancing the app's privacy features.

WhatsApp users will soon be able to choose a default theme

WhatsApp is also working on a new feature for the app that will allow users to select a default theme for the app. This theme will be independent of the setting of the phone. Till now, the WhatsApp theme is in sync with the default theme of the phone. So if the device is on a dark theme, the app also turns dark, and if the phone’s setting is on a light theme, then WhatsApp also runs the same theme. However, with the upcoming features, users will be able to customise the theme for the app individually.
