Users across the globe were met with unexpected silence on their feeds as X (formerly Twitter) and TweetDeck, respectively, experienced significant outages. Downdetector.com, a website that monitors online service interruptions, reported the widespread disruptions.

X users were greeted with a message proclaiming "Welcome to X!" instead of the usual series of posts. Similarly, those using X Pro encountered a frustrating notification stating "Waiting for posts," indicating an inability to load new content. The outage was not limited to viewing difficulties; all tabs, including 'Following,' 'For You’, and 'Lists’, appeared empty, suggesting a comprehensive visibility problem for posts.

Despite the inability to view posts, people responded swiftly with the hashtag #TwitterDown trending on the platform within minutes. This indicated that while users could still post tweets, they remained invisible to others, creating a ghostly echo chamber where messages were sent but not received.

Here’s how people reacted to the outage:

This is not the first technical hiccup for the Elon Musk-owned micro-blogging site as just a week prior, on December 14, all outgoing links from the platform ceased functioning due to an error with the URL redirect system, which typically tracks user activity before rerouting them.

These repeated technical difficulties have raised concerns among the platform's user base, especially following the $44 billion sale to Musk, which has been marked by layoffs, policy changes, and legal disputes.
