It’s the $130k VeeDub, the dearest and most luxurious machine in Volkswagen’s local range. The Touareg R is also the most powerful VW production model ever and behaves more like a sports machine than a family-sized, 2.5 tonne SUV has any right to.

The trick on the power front is combining a three-litre turbocharged V6 with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The R can slink around silently for 40-something kilometres on e-power alone, or combine electrons and premium unleaded to power to 100km/h in a shade over 5 seconds.
