Gateshead café launches quirky 'Run for your lunch' deal inviting customers to trade distance for discount
Customers at Pedalling Squares cafe in Swalwell can exchange their hard earned miles for a discount on their lunch after a new deal is launched to encourage getting people active
by Emily Gray · ChronicleLiveA Gateshead café has launched a new quirky innovative 'Run for your lunch', encouraging customers to trade in their race number in exchange for a discount to match their distance.
The team at Pedalling Squares in Swalwell, Gateshead, have created a new concept to promote running and leading a health lifestyle, whilst also offering custimers ther chance to redeem a discount.
Owner Erin Murphy explains to ChronicleLive: "All the team that works in the café are runners and we wanted to promote running and getting active. We're tapping into a massive community of active people and this is a new niche way not seen before."
'Run for your lunch' will allow customers who bring in their race number from a running or sporting event, to pin it onto 'the wall' in exchange for a 1% discount on every mile ran.
For example, a 5K run (3miles) = 3% off, 10k (6 miles) = 6% off, half a marathon = 13% off and a marathon = 26% off. Those who run 50 miles ultra will even receive half price off their order, whilst anyone who has ran over 100 miles will have their order fully paid for on the house!
The discount is only available to the runner who has successful completed their event, so groups may see a bit of friendly competition on the table of who has secured the biggest discount depending on how many miles each has completed.
It's hoped to encourage a continuous and constant active lifestyle, and as no race numbers prior to September 2024 are valid, instead customers will have 30 days from their event to trade in their number for a discount.
"We first opened Pedalling Square as a cycle café 10 years ago which was a different concept for then. over time we've developed into something more and encourage all sorts of fitness activities and a healthy lifestyle. A lot of our customers are cyclists, runners, dog walkers, some even canoe."
No strangers from being active themselves, Eric is a keen runner and has taken part in trail running events. Whilst his son has ran marathons, and many staff in the café team also enjoy ultra running.
"The heritage of running in the North East has been around for a long time, and many great running events such as the Great North Run and the Blaydon Races grow bigger and bigger every year with people trying to secure places."
The new wall of race numbers has already began to take shape as a focal point amongst customers. The colourful display has became an art piece in itself, as more numbers are pinned to the wall it tells the tale of an active North East community.
"Its creating a talking point, people will bring their number in and others interested will ask them about the routes and conditions before signing up for certain events they've wanted to race in, or share similar experiences from the same race. It's became an information point and it's getting people together from trail running and road running communities," Eric adds.
"We've already had a couple of ultra runners coming in
