There are a number of road closures in place across the North East this week.

Some roads are closed while others have lane closures. Temporary traffic measures or diversion routes may also be in place on roads in the region.

Motorists are urged to make allowances for these closures and alter their travel arrangements if necessary. If you're planning to travel through Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland or County Durham take a look at the list below to see whether your journey will be affected.

Newcastle

  • Gosforth: Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A191 Benton Park Road at A189 Killingworth Road (South Goforth roundabout). Until May.
  • Heaton: Heaton Park View closed in both directions due to roadworks from Warwick Street to Heaton Road. Until September.
  • Newcastle city centre: Pilgrim Street Southbound closed due to long-term roadworks between Blackett Street and A167 (Swan House Roundabout). Until March, 2025.

Gateshead

  • Birtley: Temporary traffic lights on A167 Durham Road near the Birtley Leisure Centre. Until March..
  • Ryton: Temporary traffic lights due to telecoms work on Hexham Old Road in both directions at Tyne Gardens. Until on January 23.
  • Narrow lanes and speed restriction of 50mph due to major widening works on A1 Western Bypass in both directions from J67 Kingsway South (Coalhouse Roundabout) to A1(M) J65 / A194M Birtley. Expect delays. Until May, 2025.

Northumberland

  • Blyth: Bridge Street closed due to roadworks from B1329 to B1327 Union Street. Until November.
  • Cramlington: Speed restriction of 40mph due to roadworks on A19 at A189 (Moor Farm Roundabout). Expect delays. Until January 30.
  • Longframlington: B6344 closed in both directions due to roadworks between the A697 (Longframlington) and Longframlington turn-off (Pauperhaugh). Until March 29.
  • Mickley: Station Bank in both directions closed due to gas leak between A695 and Bewick Garth. Until January 26.

North Tyneside

  • North Shields: Temporary traffic lights due to long-term roadworks on Liddell Street near Clive Street. Until May 13.
  • North Shields: Tyne Street closed due to roadworks from Union Street to Linskill Street. Until May 15.
  • North Shields: Bell Street closed in both directions due to roadworks from Liddell Street to Union Quay. Until June.

South Tyneside

  • South Shields: Laygate Street closed due to roadworks from Commercial Road to West Holborn. Until 6pm on March 31.
  • South Shields: East George Potts Street One Way Street closed due to roadworks from A1018 Imeary Street to Westoe Road. Until 5pm on February 21..

Sunderland

  • Hendon: Prospect Row closed in both directions due to roadworks from Silver Street to Barrack Street. Until December.

County Durham

  • Hamsterley Mill: Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on B6310 Burnopfield Road near Mill Farm Road.

    Until January 31.

  • Lanchester: Temporary traffic lights due to telecoms work on A691 Consett Road near The School and Sixth Form. Until January 23.
  • Langley Park: Wallnook Lane closed in both directions closed due to roadworks between Front Terrace and Firs Terrace. Until December.
  • Ouston: Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Greenford Lane at Milbanke Close. Until January 31.
