I asked for emergency time off at work — my boss’ response was shocking
· New York PostHere’s yet another tale of bosses behaving badly.
An anonymous Reddit user posted a screenshot of a text exchange with their employer in the group r/mildlyinfuriating with the caption, “Guess I’m looking for a new job.”
The poster, Reddit user @moonwtr, explained to their boss via text that their grandfather fell and was seriously injured, and they would need a day off of work to visit him at the hospital.
“Hi, I just got a call from my mom. My grandpa fell and is in the hospital with broken ribs and a collapsed lung. They said they don’t know how long he might be around for and I’d like to go visit him tomorrow when he’s awake,” they started off the text message.
“If you absolutely need me to open the shop tomorrow, I’m happy to as long as I can leave by 8:30. If you won’t be in before then, I’ll need to take tomorrow off. I’m sorry for the late notice, my mom just called me.”
The response they received from their boss led them to believe he was firing them on the spot.
“That’s not gonna work. We are a week before Christmas,” the boss told them. “Don’t bother coming in.”
After sharing the interaction on Reddit, many people couldn’t help but point out the irony and hypocrisy.
“So their solution to not having enough staff is to fire one of their staff?” asked one Reddit user.
“‘We can’t have you not come in, So why don’t you just not come in.’ This man is an absolute genius,” another mocked.
Others advised the poster not to share so much information.
“Please stop offering so much information to employers. Just a simple, ‘I have a family emergency and cannot come in tomorrow’ and leave it at that,” someone suggested.
