Rishwika Salibindla sadly died after her dad got into his car to go to the supermarket and accidentally ran over her, as he had not realised she was standing behind the vehicle
by Chiara Fiorillo · The MirrorA dad has been left heartbroken after accidentally running over his one-year-old daughter while leaving for the supermarket in his SUV.
Little Rishwika died after her dad Joseph Reddy Salibindla, 41, got into his car to go to the supermarket and backed into her as he was unaware the girl had followed him out of their home and was standing behind the vehicle. The tragedy happened in Edna Avenue, Toongabbie, in Sydney's northwest, just before 5.30pm on Friday.
When he got out of his Audi SUV, Mr Salibindla found his 21-month-old daughter covered in blood. His wife Sravanthi Thirumalareddy and their two sons, who were inside the family home, rushed outside before the emergency services arrived.
Rishwika's dad tried to keep her alive until six ambulance crews arrived but the girl later died from her injuries. Mr Salibindla was later taken to Parramatta police station and assisted officers with their inquiries. No charges have been filed.
Following the tragedy, the girl's family told 9News they were "completely heartbroken" and that her mum is "inconsolable". They added: "It's every family's worst nightmare, but they come from a big church community and are supporting each other."
An investigation is underway and a report will be prepared for the coroner. Christine Erskine, the executive officer of Kidsafe New South Wales, said: "Something like this is very hard to recover from." She added: "Everyone in the community breaks their heart for the family and they will need support for a very long time."
Following the toddler's death, a mourner wrote on social media: "A tragic incident that has taken away a beautiful angel." Another added: "May little Rishwika rest in eternal peace, leaving behind cherished memories that will forever be held close to the hearts of those who knew and loved her."
A family friend has now launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the girl's loved ones with the funeral and memorial services. You can donate here.
