Bureau of Public Safety Urges Review of Speed Limit on Accra-Tema Motorway
by News Ghana · News GhanaThe Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has called for a comprehensive review of the speed limit on the Accra-Tema motorway, citing recent increases in traffic accidents along the route.
In a statement to Citi News, Nana Yaw Akwada, Executive Secretary of the BPS, emphasized the need for authorities to consider lowering the speed limit to mitigate accidents.
Akwada pointed out that the proximity of residential settlements to the motorway has raised concerns about the safety of high-speed travel.
“Allowing settlements to develop so close to a major expressway necessitates reassessing road conditions, permissible speeds, and vehicle types permitted on the motorway,” Akwada stated.
“It is imperative that we take civil action to ensure the safety of all motorists.”
The BPS’s recommendation follows a series of fatal accidents on the Accra-Tema motorway, which have resulted in multiple fatalities.
The bureau contends that reducing speed limits could significantly decrease the incidence of such tragic events.
Authorities have yet to respond to the BPS’s proposal. However, Akwada expressed optimism that stakeholders would prioritize public safety and swiftly initiate discussions on implementing revised speed regulations for the motorway.
