M1 diversion route after police close motorway between J29 for Mansfield and J30 for Worksop

National Highways has issued a diversion route for drivers impacted by the closure of the M1 southbound due to a police incident. The motorway was initially fully closed due to the incident, which was first reported by Derbyshire Police just after 11pm last night (Saturday, August 24).

National Highways has confirmed the southbound carriageway between junction 30 for Worksop and Barlborough and junction 29 for Chesterfield and Mansfield is "expected to remain closed throughout the morning" of Sunday, August 25 as a team of specialist crews begin a "complex cleanup operation". The northbound carriageway had reopened by around 2am, having been first closed at around 12.30am.

National Highways, which manages the M1, has advised road users travelling southbound to follow the Hollow Square diversion symbol on road signs, which will take them on the following diversion:

  • At the M1 J30, exit onto the A616 east and continue for approx. 300m.
  • At the roundabout in Barlborough, take the A619 south-west and follow for approximately 11 miles.
  • At the roundabout for the A619/ A61 in Chesterfield, take the A61 and continue for approx. 3 miles.
  • At the roundabout with the A617 (Hornsbridge), take the eastbound exit and continue on the A617.
  • Rejoin the M1 at J29.

The authority added: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."
