Israeli hostage, 85, confronted Hamas chief and told him he should be ‘ashamed of himself’

One of the Israeli hostages already released by Hamas said she reprimanded the leader of the terrorist group, Yahya Sinwar, when coming face-to-face with him.

Yocheved Lifshitz, who was freed in October prior to the current ceasefire, which has resulted in the release of dozens of hostages, told Sinwar that he should be "ashamed of himself" for his role in the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks. Hamas and other terrorist groups kidnapped roughly 240 people during the attacks, which resulted in the deaths of roughly 1,200 people.

“Sinwar was with us three to four days after we arrived. I asked him how he is not ashamed to do such a thing to people who have supported peace all these years,” Lifshitz told the Hebrew-language newspaper Davar during a protest for the return of hostages still held by Hamas, including her husband, on Tuesday.

A relative of another hostage told Channel 12 that Sinwar introduced himself to a group of hostages taken from the Nir Oz community, telling them, “Hello, I am Yahya Sinwar. You are the most protected here. Nothing will happen to you.”

Hamas and Israel agreed to a temporary truce in which Hamas would release dozens of hostages in exchange for a pause in hostilities, a surge in humanitarian aid, and the release of three times as many Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. Both parties agreed to extend the initial truce for two days and officials have raised the possibility of a second extension.

The current agreement only stipulates the release of women and children held by Hamas, though Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al Ansari, a main player in the negotiations, said on CNN on Wednesday that "we are moving towards civilian men being released."

Wednesday is the last day of the truce, though Ansari said they are "hopeful" the final group of hostages will be released and they will be able to announce a subsequent extension. Israeli leaders have said they would extend the ceasefire one day for every 10 hostages that are released.

"We are hopeful that within a couple of hours we will have the release of the final batch [of hostages] but also we will be able to announce an extension," he said. “We are very optimistic that we will have good news to share today."

Israeli government spokesman Eylon Levy said 86 people have been released and another 161 are still being held hostage. He said there are still 35 women being held and there are four people under the age of 18.

Sinwar served years in an Israeli prison for his part in the abduction and murder of two Israeli soldiers. He was freed in 2011 as part of the prisoner exchange in which Hamas released an IDF soldier it had captured five years earlier, Gilad Shalit, in exchange for over 1,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons.
