The rape case against Sajjan Jindal, managing director of the JSW Group, was false and the complainant tried to frame him, said the Mumbai police.

India Today TV had exclusive access to the information regarding the closure report filed in the Bandra Metropolitan Magistrate Court on March 16. The Mumbai Police said the complainant filed the rape case against Jindal "with the intention of framing the accused in a false crime".

The investigation by the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) Police revealed that Jindal did not go to the hotel on the day that the woman said he tried to molest her. Police collected testimony from witnesses at the hotel, according to the closure report.

The FIR in the case was filed in December last year after a woman in Mumbai approached the Bombay High Court. Her lawyers had submitted to the court that she had first approached the BKC Police in February 2023, but they did not pay heed to her complaint.

In her complaint, the woman said the incident happened on December 24, 2021.

In the closure report, police said it observed that the woman registered her complaint long after the incident occurred. She also failed to submit evidence after promising to do so in the complaint, added the police.

The complainant also did not appear to record her statement despite the police repeatedly writing to the court, said the investigators. She "wasted" the court's time, they added.

Police concluded that there "was no wrongdoing with the woman" after they collected the testimony of witnesses who were present at the place where she alleged the incident took place and from evidence obtained during their investigation.

Saying that the complainant tried to frame Sajjan Jindal for a "false crime", the police requested the magistrate court to grant a summary judgement of the case. A summary judgement is a ruling made by a court without a trial when there is no genuine dispute about the essential facts of the case, allowing for a swift resolution based on the legal merits.

When the rape case was filed against him in December 2023, Sajjan Jindal said the charges against him were “false and baseless”.
