Plans for a Tyne view Gateshead holiday let to be decided by councillors next week

Plans to convert Ryton's 'Ferry House' into a holiday will finally be decided by councillors next week.

Proposals for a holiday let with Tyne views in Ryton are set for a council decision next week following a site visit.

The fate of the ‘Ferry House’ on Keelmans Way, Ryton, will be decided at Gateshead Civic Centre on Wednesday, May 15. The applicant, Mr Shaun Bays, has applied to split the existing home to create a four-bedroom holiday let with a bathroom, separate toilet, and open plan kitchen and living room.

The planning statement supplied by the applicant to Gateshead Council said there would be a maximum occupancy of six people in the let, pending council approval, with no parties permitted. However, council officers have recommended the plans for refusal, citing concerns over a potential “unacceptable impact upon vehicle and pedestrian safety”.

The council’s report read: “The area proposed for car parking is already utilised for parking for the applicant and the owner of Tyne View Bungalow as well as any visitors to that location and the introduction of further parking in the vicinity, officers consider would have serious implications on emergency vehicle access and refuse collection requirements.

“Existing parking in this location is ad-hoc with no designated bays and there is no formal turning facility at the end of River Lane, however, the area proposed as parking currently acts as an informal turning area.

Despite the concerns of officers, the plans have generated eight letters of support, including one from Ryton, Crawcrook and Stella councillor Chris Buckley. Coun Buckley, according to council documents, believes highway concerns can be rectified with a suitable management plan.

Supporters also highlight the potential for a boost to local tourism and Rtyon businesses. Councillors will gather at the civic centre at 10 am, after having made their site visit, next week to have their final say on the project.
