Law enforcement in Los Angeles is taking a proactive approach to combatting organized retail theft. They are not only focused on apprehending the bold and dangerous thieves but also on holding them accountable. This includes going after those who benefit from the theft, such as sellers and distributors. In recent years, the Los Angeles District Attorney's office has handled hundreds of theft cases, resulting in felony and conspiracy charges that could land criminals behind bars for years.
The task force formed to combat retail crime has recovered over $2.3 million in stolen property and seized 35 firearms. With over 400 arrests and 200 retail theft cases prosecuted in 2023 alone, law enforcement is determined to tackle these dangerous crimes head-on.
Law enforcement is not only focused on catching the thieves but also on apprehending those who sell and distribute stolen goods. Marketing platforms have become hotspots for selling large quantities of stolen goods, creating an incentive for criminals. District Attorney Gascon warns the public that if a deal looks too good to be true online, it may involve buying stolen items.
