Angela Rayner is reported to the taxman over allegations of unpaid tax
by Martin Beckford Policy Editor · Mail OnlineAngela Rayner was last night reported to the taxman over allegations she may have failed to pay thousands of pounds when selling her old home.
Labour's deputy leader must be investigated, HM Revenue & Customs was told, over whether capital gains tax was due on £48,500 profit she made selling her former council house.
Ms Rayner has insisted the home in Vicarage Road, Stockport, was her main residence, exempting her from the levy when she sold up in 2015, and she had taken tax and legal advice from experts.
But neighbours say she let her brother live there for free, with him referring to her as his 'landlady', while she was rarely seen. Evidence suggests she was living a mile away at her then-husband Mark Rayner's home in Lowndes Lane.
The Mail on Sunday revealed yesterday that the council helped pay for the kerb to be dropped outside Lowndes Lane to help her family, including her registered blind son.

If that was her main residence, her own property would be a second home and she'd have been liable to pay up to £3,500 in CGT on the £127,500 sale, an expert said last week.
Greater Manchester Police was also asked to investigate if Ms Rayner, 43, put incorrect facts on the electoral roll.
Last night in another twist, Red Wall Tory James Daly contacted HMRC to demand a probe.
The MP for Bury North wrote: 'I am writing regarding the need for an investigation into the tax affairs of the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.'
His intervention came after Labour's education spokesman Bridget Phillipson told GB News: 'Angela Rayner has sought advice and is clear that she has done nothing wrong.'
