Moment a Brazilian man falls into a manhole before being found DEAD
by Adry Torres For Dailymail.com · Mail OnlineThis is the frightening moment a man fell into a manhole and drowned before he was found in a stream in Brazil.
The incident took place Saturday in the southern city of Ponta Grossa when João Alves, 45, was walking home during a rainstorm.
A security camera recorded Alves moving with difficulty when he approached the uncovered sewer hole near a residence and him falling into the opening.
Alves was dragged down the pipe and found a little more than half a mile away stuck to tree branches in the stream, the fire department said.
Ponta Grossa fire department sub-lieutenant Amauri Pedroso told Braizlian news outlet G1 that the manhole was sufficiently big 'to fit a whole person. He drowned.'
Alves was initially reported missing after he failed to show up at his home, where he lived with his grandmother.
His grandmother became increasingly concerned when she found his slipper on the street near the manhole.
'We knew that the neighbor had a security camera, and we saw what had happened,' Alves' niece, Fabíola Seliger said.
'We filed a police report and called the firefighters.'
Alves' deadly fall came five days after seven-year-old boy Raphael dos Santos survived after he fell into a manhole during the middle of a rainstorm about 415 miles away in the town of Cruz Alta.
Dos Santos was playing with friends when he slipped into the uncovered drain and was swept two and a half blocks away from his home.
The child was able to crawl out on his own and was met by his father and friends.
He received 25 stitches to close a cut above his eyebrow.
