Tories accuse Labour of 'flip flopping' over £28bn green energy pledge

Senior Tories have accused Labour of 'flip flopping' over its pledge to spend £28billion a year on green energy.

Conservative Party chairman Richard Holden warned that the confusion over the party's flagship policy was proof that Sir Keir Starmer had 'no plan'.

Reports last week suggested that the Labour leader had backtracked on his vow on renewable energy. But Labour denied this. Since then, there have been reports that Labour has removed the £28billion figure from their draft manifesto but senior party figures insist nothing has changed.

Last night Mr Holden told the Mail: 'Labour's flip-flop on a U-turn on their flagship idea is irrefutable proof – if any was required – that Starmer has no plan.

'Sir Keir can't say how he'd fund his £28billion a year spending spree because he doesn't have a plan to pay for it, which only means one thing: higher taxes for everyone.'

Yesterday, Labour frontbencher Stephen Kinnock said the party had a 'clear commitment' to reaching that level of investment in the second half of a Labour first term. Another source told the Mail that the figure would remain 'subject to our fiscal rules'.
