Swedish royals shine at Nobel festivities in Stockholm

by · Royal Central

It’s one of the most anticipated events in the royal calendar each year, and the Swedish Royal Family never fails to disappoint at the Nobel Prize ceremonies.

The annual event begins in the Stockholm Concert Hall where King Carl XVI Gustaf presents each of the Nobel Prizes to the laureates.

This year, he was supported by Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia. Princess Madeleine, who resides in Florida with her family, was unable to attend. The Queen, Crown Princess and Prince Daniel sat on the stage with His Majesty while the remainder of the Royal Family sat in the audience.

The responsibility of distributing the prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology and medicine, as well as the presentation of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences, belongs to the Swedish monarch. Handing out the Nobel Peace Prize is done in Oslo under the watchful eye of the Norwegian monarch.

After the presentation, a gala banquet is held at the Stockholm City Hall in the evening for the laureates, the Nobel Foundation and the Swedish Royal Family.

The family enters, each escorting a laureate to the tables, in their finest gowns and jewels. The King sat with Professor Anne L’Huillier, the laureate in physics, and the Crown Princess sat in between Professor Moungi Bawendi, the laureate in chemistry, and Professor Pierre Agostini, the winner in physics.

What the female members of the family will wear each year is followed closely by royal watchers. This year, Queen Silvia wore the Nine Pronged Tiara with a pink embellished gown while the Crown Princess matched her purple gown with the Amethyst Tiara. Princess Sofia wore her original wedding Palmetto Tiara with emerald settings and a black gown.

It’s an event that never fails to disappoint – honouring well-deserved Nobel laureates and seeing the Swedish royals continue their support of the Nobel Foundation.
