The music icon, best known for her hit 'All I Want for Christmas Is You', took to social media with a heavy heart on Monday, informing her fans of the passing of her mother Patricia and sister Alison during the same weekend.
A heartbroken Mariah, at 55, disclosed to People magazine: "My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend." She added: "Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."
Recollecting the precious time before the heartbreaking event, Mariah cherished the final moments, saying: "I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mum before she passed."
Amid her sorrow, Mariah extended gratitude for the flood of support shes received and requested space in this difficult period, adding: "I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."
Mystery surrounds the circumstances, as details about what led to their deaths have been closely guarded and their causes of death have not been made public. Patricia herself was an accomplished opera singer and voice coach who, along with ex-husband Alfred Roy Carey, raised siblings Alison, Mariah, and Morgan.
After her split from Alfred Roy Carey in 1973, Patricia forged ahead with her music career. Mariah's sister, Alison, has struggled significantly, enduring issues such as homelessness and a years-long estrangement from her globally renowned sibling.
Mariah Carey hasn't shied away from discussing the complex dynamics of her relationship with her mother, Patricia. In her intimate autobiography, 'The Meaning of Mariah Carey', she acknowledges the many layers of their connection, saying: "Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities."
She delves deeper into the nuances of their bond in the memoir, stating: "It's never been only black-and-white - it's been a whole rainbow of emotions. Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment."
Notwithstanding the ups and downs with Patricia, the ties have held strong, evidenced when they performed together on ABC's 'Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You' special in 2010, delivering a harmonious rendition of 'O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus'.
In a poignant excerpt directed towards Patricia in her book, Mariah writes: "And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always."
Mariah has been open about the challenges she's faced with her family, particularly with her siblings. In her heartfelt memoir, the iconic singer shared that for her mental and physical wellbeing, she had to cut ties with her sister Alison and brother Morgan.
She said she finally decided it was "emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact".
As a mother of two 13-year-old twins, Morocco and Monroe, whom she shares with ex-husband Nick Cannon, Mariah Carey has dealt firsthand with "dysfunction" at Christmas. Despite being known for her Christmas hits, notably the perennial favourite 'All I Want For Christmas Is You', her memories of the festive period aren't all filled with cheer, as she lamented back in 2021.
Even with three decades of success for her classic festive tune, the 55 year old songbird has opened up about mixed feelings during previous holidays. Mariah Carey gave an intimate glimpse into her personal struggles around this time, recalling disrupted Christmases from her childhood years.
Reflecting on emotions from holidays past, Mariah commented in 2021: "I always wanted Christmas to be perfect and I always looked forward to the holidays, but I had this incredibly dysfunctional family that would ruin it every year."
Movingly, she reminisced about making sombre festive discoveries as a child, vowing to herself: "I was like, 'When I grow up, I am never going to let that happen. I am going to make Christmas perfect every year'."
