Denise Welch has fought back tears in an "emotional" admission and explained: "I was terrified." The ITV Loose Women star has addressed her return to the stage in a new play, admitting her nerves have left her "terrified" throughout the run of shows.

The former Channel 4 Hollyoaks actress said: "When you are in this industry, you often have to do lots of things, diversify in order to survive, stay relevant, work." Former ITV Coronation Street favourite Denise added that she wanted to "take advantage of the emotion".

"Feel the fear, because you have to - I was terrified, I was s****ing myself," she said. Denise continued: "In order to do a two-hander where there are only two of you on stage for two hours, you have to have incredible trust in someone."

Denise, who used to star in BBC Waterloo Road too, went on and added: "I'm going to miss him terribly. I'm very emotional because I've loved doing this play, it's meant so much to me." She added: "It's the most beautiful play, it's poignant, it's moving, it's funny and Jim Cartwright is a genius in my opinion.

"Even though we had arguments in rehearsal because I'm sure he doesn't read his own lines back because they're so f*****g hard to learn!" Denise went: "I haven't had [this kind of] response to anything I've done probably ever!"

"We've played five weeks, one week being an extension, to sold out audiences. We have made people laugh and cry every night, we have had a standing ovation every night. It has been a joy to say Jim Cartwright's words!" she said.

"Every single night I've had a huge bunch of friends in - not just to see me but because they've read the reviews about how incredible this play is." She continued: "With Matthew Kelly on board, we have created something really special."

"To the audiences who packed this little theatre every night and helped keep this theatre on its feet in difficult times," Denise continued. "My friends and my husband who encouraged me to get back on stage. The Gap in my life will now be felt. Til next time!"
