by Daragh Nolan · Leinster LeaderPúca kicks off a new era with what he calls “Funeral Pop”; as he releases his single “And I Gleam Along A Knife Edge”.
Inspired by his work as a funeral singer, Púca’s music has been irrevocably shaped by the great Irish traditions of mourning and the celebration of life.
Kildare-born Colm Conlan is a cattle farmer by day and keyboardist/backing vocalist with Irish country-pop sensation CMAT by night. His on-stage persona of Púca, as the name suggests, brings an ethereal almost phantom-like vibe of nostalgia and Irish culture mixed with dance music, Pop and Folk.
"This song, and the music I intend to release going forward is heavy on the liturgical references, so I have christened it ‘Funeral Pop’ – music to wake the dead," Conlan said.
“And I Gleam Along A Knife Edge”, is the second release from Púca, following his debut “Man of the Hour”, a previous Track of the Week with RTÉ 2FM. This new sound blends synth and snare with direct references to great Irish composer Seán O’Riada’s “Ag Críost an Síol”, and deals with themes of trauma induced indifference, and breaking the cycle to emerge with a new mastery of one’s own destiny.
The song was originally recorded and produced in 2022 with Alex O’Keeffe who has worked on tracks for the likes of Lyra, Bobbi Arlo, & Jafaris. Contributions also come from producer with Tebi Rex and Felispeaks; Silent Ghost - on additional production, mixing and mastering.
The music video, by James Mitchell’s LUCKY TEN, stars enigmatic drag performer Lavender, as well as Conlan/Púca himself (A powerhouse trio of LGBTQ+ artists) in a Kate Bush meets American Gothic-esque fever dream, littered with Tarot cards, jewelled tears, and the titular knife edge.
“And I Gleam Along A Knife Edge” releases June 7. The Music Video on the same day at 5:30pm on Púca’s youtube channel.
