Fans of popular general knowledge quiz Eggheads may need to brace for disappointment - as signs suggest the show has been cancelled.

The hit gameshow has been on the air since 2003 - first airing on BBC One before transferring to BBC Two in 2005 and then to Channel 5 in 2021. The series was initially hosted by 66-year-old news host Dermot Murnaghan - and then Jeremy Vine, 58, joining the show as a co-host in 2008. Vine then took over as sole host when the series transferred to Channel 5.

Now Vine has hinted that the show has indeed been axed - as anxious fans have already feared. The first season of the game show to air on Channel 5 hit the airwaves in October 2021. A second season aired in February 2022 - and the last episodes filmed for the show were in 2023.

Now Vine has suggested the axe has fallen as he has confirmed that he has had no orders to return to the studio. Rumours have been rife that the show was cancelled as the last episode aired in April 2023.

Sharing his thoughts with The Sun, the host revealed: “I haven't heard anything about Eggheads for a while now. I think I have done about 1200 shows - but whether we are doing any more I don't know. We last filmed an episode over a year ago.

“It may well be we are doing it in 30 years' time, who knows, but no immediate plans for any more.” The Mirror has contacted a Channel 5 representative for comment.

The current cast of high IQ quizzers that make up the Egghead panel includes Kevin Ashman and Chris Hughes who both joined the cast in 2003, Barry Simmons who joined in 2008, Pat Gibson who joined in 2009, Lisa Thiel who joined in 2014, Steve Cooke and Beth Webster who both joined in 2016 and Olav Bjortomt who joined the line-up in 2021. Past Eggheads include Daphne Fowler who served from 2003 until 2014, David Rainford who served from 2012 until 2018, and Judith Keppel who starred on the show from 2003 until 2022 and returned again in 2023.

CJ de Mooi was also one of the Eggheads and appeared initially from 2003 until 2012 and then returned for a second burst from 2014 until 2016. His life was thrown into chaos in 2016 when an arrest warrant was issued for him over claims he made in his autobiography, titled My Journey From the Streets to the Screens, in which he claimed to have punched a drug addict and thrown them into an Amsterdam canal. He subsequently was declared bankrupt in 2018 - reportedly due to the lengthy legal issues his memoir confession sparked.
