The top names for 2023 have been revealed, and there's a new name reaching the top ten - thanks to a certain royal.

Unsurprisingly, the name Charles has gained popularity, jumping from 18th to sixth place in the space of a year. In keeping with the royal theme, Frederick registered as the favourite boys' name for readers of the newspaper.

Famous Fredericks include Prussian King Frederick the Great, and noteworthy Freddie's include England cricket legend Freddie Flintoff and musical sensation and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

Taking the trophy for number one girls' name were both Eliza and Clementine, who shared the honour this year after Clementine rose from 5th place. Notable Clementines include Clementine Churchill, who provided a rock of support for her husband Sir Winston during the Second World War.

Celebrity Elizas include singer Eliza Doolittle and historic examples include Eliza Fraser, an English woman who was shipwrecked off the coast of Australia on an island that would later be named 'Fraser Island'. However, despite Eliza still ranking highest, Elizabeth the name of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had dropped off the chart this year.

The most popular names have been recorded by the Telegraph "every year" for the last half-century by Susan Cole, 75, a retired librarian from Sutton, South London. Princess Charlotte is quickly becoming a very popular royal and so her name is too, having taken third place in the list for 2023.

An expert has also predicted which names are likely to be most popular in the next year, and one of them seems like an unusual choice, but it has a wonderful meaning behind it and encapsulates a value that many parents would love to see their children embody: independence.

The expert - SJ Struma, a baby name consultant and YouTuber - told Yahoo UK that they predict that Indie will be a really popular baby name choice in 2024. This comes after the use of the name has steadily risen in popularity over the last few years.
