Sam Smith is reportedly looking for love again after splitting from their fashion designer boyfriend, Christian Cowan.

The pair were an item for just 12 months and were last seen together at a party in New York on December 14. They met during their collaboration on costumes for Sam's music video for I'm Not Here to Make Friends - a single which failed to make the top 20.

The relationship proved Sam's first since coming out as non-binary in 2019 after they broke up with 13 Reasons Why star, Brandon Flynn. Now, Grammy Award-winning artist Sam is said to have returned to the VIP dating, Raya, in a bid to find romance in the New Year.

A source told MailOnline of Sam and Christian's break-up: "'Sam and Christian decided to end their relationship before Christmas. They're still friends and will continue to support each other in their respective careers but for now, they have separated. Sam has signed back up to the dating app Raya and is already connecting with new people... it's a new year and fresh start for them."

Although Sam has been linked to various famous faces - past and present - the singer has in the past spoken out about falling in love in the past and how they don't play by the rule book. Sam previously revealed to The Sun: "I've never really kind of played by the rule book. I love people and whoever I fall for, that's who I fall for. I don't know who that's going to be. Now I don't know what gender they will be, to be quite honest, and that's a freeing thing - to not be limited to one category of person. I just fall in love with whoever I fall in love with."

Opening up about starting a family, meanwhile, the Dancing With a Stranger singer previously told Apple Music's Zane Lowe they would like to have kids by the age of 25. "I want kids. I want all of it. I want to have kids," Sam declared. "I want to be with the kids and I want to watch them grow and be with them every day. I want to be mummy.

"I'm definitely going to do that at some point, but I've still got more in me. I've still got ambition. I try and settle it down all the time and play it down, but I'm ambitious and I would still want to sing to people and do this job. It's an amazing feeling."

The Mirror has approached a representative for Sam.
