ITV Emmerdale's Matthew Wolfenden claims Charley Webb ended marriage as he spills on new relationship
Emmerdale Matthew Wolfenden has hit back at trolls after he was targeted with "horrible" messages following his break-up with wife Charley Webb
by James Brinsford · The MirrorMatthew Wolfenden has slammed trolls and issued an update on his new relationship – and his split.
He explained he had been bombarded with “horrible” messages, as well as receiving abuse from people on the street after he was spotted with a 'new girlfriend' following his split from wife Charley Webb.
The Emmerdale star, who plays David Metcalfe, split from his co-star Charley, who is Debbie Dingle in the ITV soap, back in November and has recently been pictured with personal trainer Heather Scott-Martin. He has now taken to Instagram to take the trolls to task and insist that it wasn’t his “decision to end my marriage”.
Matthew said that he was not only targeted online but was approached in the street by people who were unhappy that he was seen with another woman after his relationship with Charley came to an end. Writing on his Instagram Stories, Matthew wrote: "Just to set the record straight once and for all… and hopefully this will be the end of it, and the end of me getting horrible messages on socials, and people saying nasty stuff to me in the street.
"1: It was NOT my decision to end my marriage. 2: I met Heather (who I was pictured with in London) way after my marriage ended.” Matthew then added: "Hope this clears stuff up for all the trolls out there."
Matthew was not done there as he came back with another post in which he spoke about the relationship he now has with his estranged wife, who is the mother of his three children. Addressing this situation, the soap star added: "Oh, and… 3: (and most importantly) Charley and I are still good friends. Our kids are our life and always will be.”
This comes after Matthew had been the subject of rumours that he had been "cheating" on Charley, which led to the actor to speak out previously on the claims, which he said were "an out and out lie". Matthew wrote on Instagram: "Just to set the record straight… This (so called) reporting is an out and out LIE! Can you leave us alone now? And shame on anybody who believes anything that these red tops report! Glad to get that off my chest! And if you want to come see us both in @elfmusicalldn, click the link for tickets!”
A statement from Charley in November set out her position with Matthew as she announced that they had decided to split. It read: “It is with love and respect that Matthew and I have decided to separate. We remain friends and our priority is the love for our children. For their sake we would appreciate privacy at this time.”
