Coronation Street viewers have been left saddened this evening after longtime star Peter Barlow left the cobbles after 23 years. Peter has been struggling heavily following the death of evil Stephen Reid, whom he hit with his taxi as he feared Stephen was going to kill Jenny Connor.

Since then, Peter has struggled with life, as he has been battling his own demons as well. And on tonight's episode, Peter decided to depart from Weatherfield for good, leaving his family and friends (and viewers) heartbroken, reports the Mirror.

In an emotional scene, Carla and Peter reminisced over their relationship as he packed his bags and headed to the tram stop. Fans were left in tears watching these scenes, as Peter bid his final farewell to the cobbles.

One person said: "Goodbye Peter Barlow, it’s been great #Corrie." Another wrote: "I will miss you so much Peter Barlow #corrie."

And a third added: "Little did we know when we met Chris in April that it’d be his final year on the cobbles. And what a privilege it’s been to watch him all these years! A class act through and through, effortlessly delivering nothing less than perfection every time. One of #Corrie’s modern greats."

Chris previously opened up about his final scenes as Peter and admitted that he was "moved" by the final scripts. He shared this in a chat with the BBC ahead of his exit, as he said: "We never rehearse the scenes really before we do it. You get one or two takes and I kind of know how Ali will play it.

"I just react and she reacts to me; that's the joy of it, really, and I think that if in a scene you don't know what's going to happen next, the audience don't. When I read that last script, it was emotional, not because I was leaving, but I genuinely, genuinely felt moved by it.

"I think it's as well-written a script as you're going to get at Coronation Street and I think most people will have had exactly the same thing in their life, so they'll identify with it."

He also opened up about if he could make a return one day, insisting the door had been left open. Chris said: "Of course, I've not ruled a return out, it's been such a part of my life.

"I've grown up with so many people there but I need a rest and to look to do something different, I'm not getting any younger. The thing that upset me though was walking away from the people I work with and I don't just mean the actors. I've known all these people for nearly half my life."

After his exit from Corrie, Chris has kept himself busy playing Captain Arthur K. Hook in The All New Adventures of Peter Pan. But could he make a return to the Cobbles one day, or has Peter said goodbye to Weatherfield for good?
